Recap of the Major Education Stories of 2023 - Part 2 w/ Johanna Garcia & Naveed Hasan

EPISODE SUMMARY

Leonie and Daniel recapped two more big education news stories of 2023 in their two part series. In this second and final part, they interviewed Johanna Garcia, chief of staff of state senator Robert Jackson, and the co-chair of the Class Size Working Group. Garcia was appointed by Chancellor Banks to come up with a plan to lower class size to much lower levels required by a state law passed in 2022. She shared details about the work and deliberations of the class size work group. She also spoke about the 2024 state legislative agenda regarding education, including mayoral control of city schools.

They also spoke to Naveed Hasan. There has been the increased number of migrant students in our schools, and our next guest, Naveed Hassan has been a parent leader helping to welcome these students into our schools and try to ensure that they are provided with the opportunity of a good education. Naveed is also a parent representative on the Panel for Education Policy, the NYC school board. Naveed spoke to the impact of migrant students in our schools.
