I have been the caregiver for my wife this summer. I had no idea what was going on. As I have known for many years, these are not wonderful people. I can count on my fingers those union people who helped me when I had challenges. Yes, Amy is one of them. To tell the truth, I wanted to work at home this summer my retention rights job, which was done at home during COVID, but the UFT would not help me. I wanted a caregiver accommodation, but the DOE refused. As a result I lost this retention job I have had for 15 years. I guess that is the thanks you get for being a UFT member for 48 years and a good loyal employee.
Julie Won is our Council rep in Long Island City and a part of Astoria, Queens. She is stripping light manufacturing zoning from dozens of blocks hereabouts in order to build (overbuild) lux housing with dribbles of lower cost rentals. Her husband works on Adams campaign.
She shows up anywhere, has no center but apparent greed. Oh, a big goal is the conversion of the Dept of Education Vernon Blvd. building on the waterfront that trains bus drivers, orders supplies for the schools of NYC. For more lux housing. (That building was Bezos’ takeover goal some years back, to, guessing, be the Amazonian supplier for NYC schools.)
There is no bottom for these folks. Includes Won.
Admiring your dedication, goodness and values, Norm.
Shanker purged anyone on staff or in a position in Unity who made public personal opposition to the war in Vietnam so Mulgrew's action isn't new. He follows a destructive tradition of suppressing disagreement. We need thorough democracy and that requires a concerted effort. I have stated my opposition to the recent firings and support for a staff union and hope others do the same. Let's build this and other campaigns!
I would just like to point out the obvious: the RTC represents the retirees and their families. The UFT should also protect the health care of retirees and their families and make the claims process for SHIP easier by example using the EOBs to process claims.
