Nick Bacon, UFT executive member and New Action-UFT co-chair, makes a call to real action over the Mayor's newly announced budget cuts. Repost - newaction.org
Unity/AFT/NYSUT/UFT lead by Randi Weingarten is the Democratic Party Establishment. How else can you explain advocating for forcing UFT retirees into a Medicare Advantage plan underwritten by a for-profit, non-union insurance company. Do you really expect the UFT to go to war against the Democratic Mayor it is supporting in litigation against its own retirees?
If you asked me a week ago, I'd say I don't expect the UFT to go to war against Adams for any reason at all. In many ways, I'm still doubtful, which is why I think it's important to put pressure on Mulgrew to follow through. He's very good at speeches, but as I mentioned, I'm skeptical about follow through. I agree with your assessment about Unity being beholden to the Democratic Party Establishment. One possible difference here is I think Adams is falling from grace amongst those circles, especially as the federal investigation looms - probably solidifying his place as a one term mayor. That opens up the possibility to fight back. A final point: a war on budget would be different than MAP; Mulgrew is stuck with siding with the Mayor on that one because of his signing away billions of dollars in healthcare savings; not to mention trying to shuffle money around to deal with other aspects of healthcare (e.g. in-service prescriptions). Fighting MAP is a battle I only expect to see amongst opposition unionists, but fighting the budget could theoretically be done if there's a will to organize in Unity.
You all voted for this "crap"!! Suckers.
