A 'No Confidence Vote' for UFT's Michael Mulgrew? #handsoffourhealthcare

As the City’s artificial deadline for today demanding that our city unions persuade the New York City Council to amend Admin Code 12-126 — the code that has protected our premium-free union healthcare options — expires, many are seriously questioning the roles, decision-making, and aptitude of influential union leaders, Michael Mulgrew of the United Federation of Teachers, and Henry Garrido of DC 37, within the Municipal Labor Committee. The MLC negotiates healthcare for all city workers with the City.

Two recent EONYC straw polls show that many now feel that it may be necessary for a NO CONFIDENCE VOTE of UFT President Michael Mulgrew for his unilateral decisions regarding changes to our contract during the pandemic emergency & placing our premium free healthcare in danger with his backroom deals with the City, in his role as UFT president and as a leading voice of the MLC.

The EONYC Twitter straw poll and its 176 respondents wrapped up today with over 96% saying that it’s time to consider a vote of no confidence for Mulgrew.

The second straw poll is still active and we encourage all union retirees and in-service active members to vote, now. It can be accessed at the bottom of this linked blog post:

Hands Off Our Healthcare: Time to Put The City Council, The Mayor and Mulgrew on Notice -We're the Union.
Hi Everyone, I've received a number of questions about the confusing email Michael Mulgrew sent to us this past Saturday regarding our healthcare. I know a lot of you are wondering what in the world is going on. I'm wondering too. It's no secret that here in the United States (the only major industrialized nation without universal healthcare), the costs…

Vote In Our Straw Poll - Get Involved

Tell Mulgrew, The Mayor, and the City Council: HANDS OFF OUR HEALTHCARE!

President Mulgrew's email this past Saturday is telling UFT members to urge their local politicians to change Admin Code 12-126, the law currently protecting our union healthcare. Don't do that!  Clear and comprehensive information about healthcare must first be shared with ALL UFT members, and we ALL need time to review the information and discuss how we want to move forward as a union. In the meantime, here is what you can do to protect your family's healthcare:

1. Call your City Council Member and tell them, "I am a public educator in NYC. I need my family's health care to be better and more affordable, not worse and more expensive. Do not change Admin Code 12-126!"

Here is a link to the contact info for NYC City Council Members: https://council.nyc.gov/districts/

2. Contact your City Council Member on Facebook, Twitter, Instagram, etc., and tell them to leave Admin Code 12-126 untouched. Protect the healthcare of working families and expand healthcare access for all New Yorkers!

3. Contact UFT President Michael Mulgrew at mmulgrew@uft.org, and tell him why it is so important for us to fight for healthcare gains, not healthcare givebacks!

The UFT's Health Care Strategy is a Race to the Bottom
Negotiations over a new DOE-UFT contract just started—a month after the old one expired—and already it’s looking bad. The city implied that it would not bargain over salary raises until the public sector unions can come up with additional health care savings, according to an email from UFT President Michael Mulgrew. The unions, who negotiate over health…
