On the Tuesday after Labor Day teachers in New York City return to school. For some, a few weeks vacation after teaching summer school, others, taking college courses required for certification or working in a camp, or getting reacquainted with their own family. If you’re an elementary school teacher you may have spent a few weeks learning how to teach a required new phonics-based reading program.
Was there ever a research study to validate the efficacy of the reading /writing literacy program that was adopted by so many school districts? How about a head to head study comparing a phonics approach with the literacy program?
Peter. I was involved with the Caukin's program while it was in its infancy at Teachers College. My local district D17 asked Gifted and Talented teachers from each school to evaluate the program in the early 1990's.
